What is a lip flip?
A lip flip is an anti-wrinkle treatment used to subtly alter the appearance of the upper lip without adding dermal filler.
Small amounts of prescription-only medicine are placed into selected muscles around the upper lip. This can gently reduce the inward pull of the lip and allow a little more of the upper lip to show when the face is relaxed or smiling.
It is a subtle treatment and is best suited to clients who want a small change rather than additional lip volume.
What can a lip flip help with?
A lip flip may be suitable if you would like to:
- Show slightly more of the upper lip
- Reduce the appearance of the lip curling inward when smiling
- Create a subtle enhancement without adding filler
- Improve the appearance of a very thin upper lip in suitable clients
- Create a softer balance between the upper and lower lip
A lip flip does not add volume in the same way as lip filler.
If your main goal is fuller lips, improved shape or more definition, Lip Filler may be more appropriate.
IMPORTANT: Prescription Appointment Required
Lip flip treatment uses a prescription-only medicine.
Before treatment can take place, you must attend a full face-to-face appointment with our nurse prescriber.
During this appointment, your medical history, medication and suitability will be reviewed before a prescription can be considered.
We hold regular prescribing clinics at Sculpted Rose and can let you know the next available dates.
How does a lip flip work?
The treatment temporarily reduces movement in selected muscles around the upper lip.
This can allow the lip to sit slightly more outward rather than being pulled inward by muscle movement.
The result is usually subtle.
When will I see a difference?
The treatment does not work immediately.
You may begin to notice a change after several days, with the full effect usually assessed at around 14 days.
How long does a lip flip last?
The effect is temporary and gradually wears off as normal muscle activity returns.
Longevity varies between clients and can sometimes be shorter than treatment in larger facial muscles because the muscles around the mouth are used frequently.
Lip flip aftercare
Following treatment:
- Remain upright for approximately four hours
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the area
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol for approximately 24 hours
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms and excessive heat
- Avoid facial massage or treatments involving pressure around the mouth
- Apply makeup gently once the injection sites have closed
- Allow approximately two weeks before judging the result
Contact the clinic if anything feels unusual or concerning
What should I expect afterwards?
Temporary effects may include:
- Small bumps at injection points
- Mild redness
- Bruising
- Tenderness
- Temporary changes in lip movement
Because the treatment affects muscles around the mouth, some clients may temporarily notice small changes when drinking from a straw, pronouncing certain words or performing movements that involve pursing the lips.
These effects usually reduce as the treatment wears off.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a lip flip cost?
A lip flip at Sculpted Rose is £145.
A face-to-face prescribing appointment is required before treatment.
Is a lip flip the same as lip filler?
No.
A lip flip changes the movement of the upper lip.
Lip filler adds volume, shape and definition using hyaluronic-acid dermal filler.
Will a lip flip make my lips bigger?
It does not physically add volume.
Instead, it may allow slightly more of your natural upper lip to remain visible.
Can I have a lip flip and lip filler together?
Potentially, yes.
The two treatments work differently and can sometimes be combined if both are appropriate for your goals.
Will I still be able to move my lips normally?
Yes, although temporary subtle changes in movement can occur.
The aim is to use a conservative treatment plan rather than significantly affecting normal lip function.
How quickly does it work?
You may notice an initial change within several days.
The result should usually be assessed at approximately two weeks.
How long will it last?
This varies.
Because the muscles around the mouth are very active, lip-flip results may not last as long as some other anti-wrinkle treatment areas.
Will it help a gummy smile?
A gummy-smile treatment uses different injection points and should be assessed separately.
If this is your main concern, please mention it during your consultation.
Who may not be suitable?
Treatment may not be appropriate if you:
- Are under 18
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have active infection around the treatment area
- Are currently unwell
- Have certain neurological or muscular conditions
- Take medication that may affect suitability
- Have not completed the required face-to-face prescribing appointment
- Are looking for a significant increase in lip volume
Suitability is always assessed individually.
