What is dermal filler dissolving?
Dermal filler dissolving is a treatment used to break down suitable hyaluronic-acid dermal filler.
It may be considered if previous filler has migrated, created unwanted volume, feels uneven, no longer suits your features or needs to be removed before starting a new treatment plan.
At Sculpted Rose Aesthetics & Laser, dissolving is always approached carefully.
The first step is understanding what product has been used, where it has been placed and what you would like to change.
Not all fillers can be dissolved, and treatment should only be carried out where it is appropriate and safe to do so.
Why might someone choose to dissolve filler?
Dermal filler dissolving may be considered for:
- Filler migration
- Unwanted volume
- Overfilled lips or facial areas
- Persistent lumps caused by suitable filler
- Uneven or poorly defined results
- Preparing an area for a new treatment plan
- Removing filler that no longer suits your facial proportions
- Correcting suitable hyaluronic-acid filler placed elsewhere
You do not need to have had your original filler treatment at Sculpted Rose.
We can assess filler performed at another clinic, although any information you have about the product used is extremely helpful.
IMPORTANT: Prescription Required
Hyaluronidase, the medicine used to dissolve hyaluronic-acid dermal filler, is a prescription-only medicine in the UK.
This means a prescription must be in place before elective dissolving treatment can be performed.

How does filler dissolving work?
The medicine used is called hyaluronidase.
Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid.
When injected into an area containing suitable hyaluronic-acid dermal filler, it begins breaking down the filler so that it can be cleared from the tissue.
Hyaluronidase only works on hyaluronic-acid fillers.
It will not dissolve permanent fillers or products made from other materials.
What happens before treatment?
Before dissolving, we will discuss:
- Which area you want dissolved
- Where your original filler was performed
- When it was treated
- Which filler was used, if known
- Approximately how much product was used
- Whether the area has previously been dissolved
- Your medical history
- Medication
- Allergies
- Previous reactions
If you have photographs or treatment records from your previous clinic, please bring or send these where possible.
We will also arrange the required prescription before treatment.
What happens during the treatment?
The area is cleansed and assessed before hyaluronidase is introduced into the selected area.
You may feel:
- Stinging
- Pressure
- Tenderness
The amount used depends on the filler present and the area being treated.
Will one dissolving session be enough?
Not always.
Some filler responds very quickly, while other products, larger amounts or filler that has migrated across a wider area may require more than one treatment.
We would rather reassess after the first session than unnecessarily over-treat the area.
Complete removal cannot always be guaranteed.
How quickly will I see a difference?
Hyaluronidase begins working quickly, but this does not necessarily mean you will immediately see the final result.
Swelling caused by the injections can temporarily make the area look fuller or uneven.
The area should be given time to settle before deciding whether further dissolving is required.
Is there downtime after filler dissolving?
Some temporary reaction is expected.
This may include:
- Swelling
- Redness
- Bruising
- Tenderness
- Itching
- Sensitivity
- Temporary unevenness
The area may initially appear swollen even though filler is being dissolved.
Once swelling settles, the treated area can also look flatter or more hollow than you remember.
This is because filler may previously have been providing volume or disguising your natural anatomy.
Filler dissolving aftercare
Following treatment:
- Avoid touching or pressing the area unnecessarily
- Keep the treatment area clean
- Avoid makeup until the injection sites have closed
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol for approximately 24 hours
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms and excessive heat initially
- Avoid massage unless specifically instructed
- Avoid facials or other treatments over the area until advised
- Use gentle skincare
- Avoid adding new filler until the area has fully settled and been reassessed
Contact the clinic if you experience any unexpected reaction
Allergic reactions
Hyaluronidase can cause allergic reactions, which may occasionally be serious.
Seek urgent medical help if you develop symptoms such as:
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of the tongue or throat
- Widespread hives
- Severe dizziness or faintness
- Rapidly increasing facial swelling

If possible, please find out:

If you do not know this information, we can still assess you, but there may be limitations if the filler type cannot be confirmed.
Can every type of filler be dissolved?
No.
Hyaluronidase dissolves suitable hyaluronic-acid dermal filler.
It cannot dissolve permanent fillers or non-hyaluronic-acid products.
Why would I need my lip filler dissolved?
Common reasons include:
- Migration above the lip border
- Too much existing product
- An unwanted shape
- Persistent unevenness
- Wanting to start again with a more natural treatment plan
Sometimes the best way to achieve a better lip result is to remove old filler first rather than repeatedly adding more.
Does dissolving filler hurt?
There can be stinging as hyaluronidase is injected.
The area may also feel tender afterwards.
Discomfort varies according to the treatment area and amount required.
Will all of my filler disappear?
Not necessarily.
The response depends on the type, quantity and location of filler.
Some clients achieve the desired result after one treatment, while others may need another session.
Will hyaluronidase affect my natural hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronidase can also temporarily break down naturally occurring hyaluronic acid within the treated tissue.
Your body naturally continues producing its own hyaluronic acid.
This is one of the reasons we use a considered approach rather than dissolving unnecessarily.
Will I look deflated afterwards?
Possibly, particularly if you have had filler in the area for a long time.
Once the filler has been removed, your original anatomy may become more noticeable again.
The tissues may also temporarily look different while swelling settles.
We recommend allowing the area time to recover before deciding whether any further treatment is wanted.
How soon can I have filler again?
We do not recommend immediately refilling a freshly dissolved area.
The tissue needs time to settle so that we can properly assess your natural shape and determine whether further filler is appropriate.
You will be advised when it is suitable to consider retreatment.
Can you partially dissolve filler?
Sometimes.
However, hyaluronidase can spread through the tissue and the response is not always perfectly predictable.
If you only want a small amount of filler reduced rather than fully removed, this should be discussed carefully during your consultation.
Can filler migration be fixed without dissolving?
Sometimes waiting is appropriate, but adding more filler on top of existing migration can make the problem worse.
If significant migration is present, dissolving may be recommended before further treatment.
Who is filler dissolving not suitable for?
Treatment may need to be postponed or may not be appropriate if you:
- Are under 18
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have an active infection in the treatment area
- Have broken or inflamed skin
- Are currently unwell
- Have experienced a previous serious reaction to hyaluronidase
- Have filler that is not made from hyaluronic acid
- Have a medical history requiring further assessment
- Do not have the required prescription in place
Suitability will always be assessed before treatment.
