What is tear trough filler?
Tear trough filler is a specialist injectable treatment used to improve the appearance of suitable hollows beneath the eyes.
The tear trough is the natural groove that runs from the inner corner of the eye towards the upper cheek. When this area becomes more pronounced, it can create shadowing and make the eyes appear tired even when you are well rested.
At Sculpted Rose Aesthetics & Laser, we use Teoxane Redensity 2, a hyaluronic-acid filler specifically designed for the delicate under-eye area.
Treatment is kept conservative and is only recommended where your anatomy is suitable.
Not every dark circle or tired-looking eye needs filler. Puffiness, pigmentation, thin skin, fluid retention and changes in skin quality can all contribute to the appearance of the under-eye area.
Your consultation is therefore particularly important so that we can identify what is actually causing your concern before recommending treatment.
What can tear trough filler help with?
Tear trough filler may be suitable for:
- A defined hollow beneath the eyes
- Shadowing caused by volume loss
- A tired-looking appearance caused by tear trough hollowing
- Loss of volume between the lower eyelid and upper cheek
- Age-related changes in the under-eye area
- Improving the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek
The aim is to create a softer, smoother transition beneath the eye, rather than adding obvious volume.
Is tear trough filler right for every under-eye concern?
No. Under-eye concerns can have several different causes and filler will not improve all of them.
Tear trough filler may be less suitable where the main concern is:
- Prominent eye bags
- Significant puffiness
- Fluid retention
- Malar oedema
- Very thin or crepey skin
- Pigmentation
- General poor skin quality rather than volume loss
Where the issue is primarily skin quality, Lumi Eyes or polynucleotides may be more appropriate.
How does tear trough filler work?
Tear trough filler uses carefully placed hyaluronic-acid gel to restore a small amount of volume beneath the eye.
At Sculpted Rose, we use Teoxane Redensity 2, which has been specifically developed for treatment of the delicate under-eye region.
The aim is not to make the area look fuller.
Instead, a small amount of product is used to soften the hollow and reduce the shadow created where the lower eyelid transitions into the cheek.
Under-eye filler is an area where less is often more, and conservative treatment is particularly important.
What happens during treatment?
Your appointment begins with a detailed under-eye assessment.
We will look at:
- Your tear trough anatomy
- Under-eye hollows
- Puffiness or eye bags
- Skin thickness and quality
- Fluid retention
- Cheek support
- Previous filler
- Your medical history
- Medication
- Your treatment expectations
If filler is unlikely to improve your concern, we will explain this and recommend another option where appropriate.
Following cleansing and preparation, a small amount of Redensity 2 is carefully introduced into the appropriate area.
A cannula may be used depending on your anatomy and treatment plan.
The under-eye area requires only small amounts of product, and treatment is performed conservatively.
When will I see a difference?
An initial improvement may be visible immediately.
However, swelling can temporarily change the appearance of the under-eye area.
The product should be given time to settle and integrate before the result is assessed.
We recommend allowing at least two weeks, and sometimes longer, before judging the final appearance.
How long does tear trough filler last?
Under-eye filler can last a considerable length of time in some clients.
Longevity varies according to:
- Individual metabolism
- Anatomy
- Amount of product used
- Previous treatment
- Lifestyle
- How the area responds to hyaluronic acid
We do not recommend automatically repeating tear trough filler at fixed intervals.
The area should always be reassessed before more product is added.
Is there any downtime?
The under-eye area is delicate and temporary swelling or bruising can occur.
Possible temporary effects include:
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Tenderness
- Redness
- Puffiness
- Temporary asymmetry
- Mild firmness
- Sensitivity around the treatment area
Swelling can sometimes be more noticeable the following morning.
Because under-eye skin is thin, even a small amount of bruising may appear quite visible.
Tear trough filler aftercare
Following treatment:
- Avoid touching or pressing the area unnecessarily
- Keep the area clean
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol for approximately 24 hours
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms and excessive heat initially
- Avoid facial massage and eye treatments until advised
- Avoid rubbing the eyes
- Avoid firm pressure from goggles, eye masks or similar items initially
- Apply makeup gently once the injection sites have closed
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated if swelling is present
- Avoid sunbeds and significant sun exposure
- Do not massage the filler unless specifically advised
- Follow all personalised aftercare provided during your appointment
- Allow the area time to settle before assessing the result
When should I contact the clinic?
Serious complications from dermal filler are uncommon, but the under-eye area requires particular care because of its anatomy. Dermal fillers can very rarely cause serious complications including vascular injury and visual problems.
Please contact us urgently if you experience:
- Significant or increasing pain
- Unusual whitening or blanching of the skin
- Grey, dusky or mottled skin
- Skin that feels unusually cold
- Blistering
- Rapidly worsening swelling
- Significant increasing redness or heat
- New visual disturbance
- Loss or alteration of vision
- Any sudden or unusual symptom that causes concern
Any change in vision following dermal filler requires immediate emergency assessment.

Will tear trough filler get rid of my dark circles?
It depends on what is causing them.
If the dark appearance is primarily caused by a hollow beneath the eye creating a shadow, filler may improve it.
If your dark circles are mainly caused by pigmentation, thin skin or another factor, filler may offer little benefit.
This is why we assess the area before recommending treatment.
Will tear trough filler remove eye bags?
No. Tear trough filler does not remove prominent under-eye bags.
In some clients with existing puffiness or eye bags, adding hyaluronic-acid filler may actually make the area look heavier.
If this is the case, we will not recommend treatment.
How do I know whether I need tear trough filler, Lumi Eyes or polynucleotides?
They treat different concerns.
Tear trough filler is used primarily where volume loss creates a true hollow beneath the eye.
Lumi Eyes is focused on hydration and improving the appearance of delicate under-eye skin.
Polynucleotides focus more on supporting skin quality and regeneration.
Your consultation will help determine which is most appropriate.
What filler do you use under the eyes?
We use Teoxane Redensity 2, a hyaluronic-acid filler developed specifically for the delicate under-eye area.
How much filler is used?
Usually only a small amount is required.
The under-eye area should be treated conservatively.
The exact amount depends on your anatomy and the degree of hollowing present.
Does tear trough filler hurt?
Most clients find the treatment manageable.
You may feel pressure, pinching or mild discomfort.
Redensity 2 contains lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, which helps improve comfort during treatment.
Will I swell afterwards?
Some swelling is possible.
The under-eye area can retain fluid, so swelling may sometimes appear more noticeable the morning after treatment.
This normally improves as the area settles.
Can tear trough filler make my under-eyes puffy?
Yes, this can occur.
Hyaluronic acid attracts water, which means tear trough filler is not suitable for everyone, particularly those already prone to fluid retention or puffiness.
Careful client selection is extremely important.
Can tear trough filler migrate?
As with other dermal fillers, unwanted product positioning or persistent filler can occur.
If you have previously had under-eye filler, this will be assessed before any further treatment is considered.
Can tear trough filler be dissolved?
Suitable hyaluronic-acid filler can usually be dissolved with hyaluronidase where clinically appropriate.
How long does tear trough filler last?
This varies considerably.
The under-eye area tends to have relatively little movement compared with the lips, and filler can remain for a long period in some clients.
We therefore recommend reassessment rather than automatically booking repeat treatment.
Can I have tear trough filler if I have been treated somewhere else?
Potentially. Please tell us:
- When you were previously treated
- Which product was used, if known
- How much was injected
- Whether you have experienced puffiness or swelling
- Whether the area has ever been dissolved
Existing filler needs to be assessed before more is added.
How soon before an event should I book?
Allow plenty of time before weddings, holidays, photographs or important events.
Bruising and swelling can occur and may occasionally take longer than expected to resolve.
We recommend booking several weeks in advance wherever possible.
Who is tear trough filler not suitable for?
Treatment may not be suitable if you:
- Are under 18
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have an active infection or inflammation
- Have significant under-eye bags
- Have persistent puffiness or fluid retention
- Have malar oedema
- Have very thin or poor-quality under-eye skin where filler is unlikely to help
- Have predominantly pigmented dark circles
- Have unresolved previous filler
- Are currently unwell
- Have certain medical conditions or allergies
- Have expectations that cannot realistically be achieved with filler
