What is masseter treatment?
Masseter treatment is an anti-wrinkle injectable treatment used cosmetically to reduce the activity of the masseter muscles at the sides of the jaw.
The masseter muscles are naturally strong chewing muscles. In some clients they are particularly prominent, which can contribute to a wider or more square-looking lower face.
By carefully reducing activity within these muscles, treatment can gradually create a softer and more tapered appearance through the jawline.
At Sculpted Rose Aesthetics & Laser, this treatment is offered for cosmetic facial slimming and lower-face balancing.
What can masseter treatment help with?
Masseter treatment may be suitable if you would like to:
- Soften the appearance of a square jaw
- Reduce the prominence of enlarged masseter muscles
- Create a more tapered lower-face appearance
- Improve facial balance
- Reduce heaviness through the lower face
- Create a softer jawline without dermal filler
The result is gradual and depends on your natural facial structure and the size of the muscles being treated.
IMPORTANT: Prescription Appointment Required
Masseter treatment uses a prescription-only medicine.
Before treatment can take place, you must attend a full face-to-face consultation with our nurse prescriber.
During this appointment, your medical history, medication and suitability will be assessed before a prescription can be considered.
We hold regular prescribing clinics at Sculpted Rose and can let you know the next available dates.
How does masseter treatment work?
Small amounts of prescription-only medicine are injected into carefully selected points within the masseter muscles.
This temporarily reduces the activity of the treated muscles.
Over time, reduced muscle activity can allow the muscles to become less prominent, gradually softening the width of the lower face.
Unlike dermal filler, this treatment does not add volume or structure.
What happens during treatment?
Your jaw and facial movement will be assessed before treatment.
You may be asked to clench your teeth so that the masseter muscles can be clearly identified.
The skin is cleansed before a series of small injections are placed into the selected muscles.
The appointment itself is usually relatively quick.
When will I see a difference?
You may begin to notice a reduction in muscle activity within the first couple of weeks.
Changes in the shape and width of the lower face take longer because the muscle gradually becomes less prominent over time.
A visible slimming effect may take several weeks to become noticeable and can continue developing over the following months.
How long does it last?
The effect is temporary.
Longevity varies depending on:
- Individual muscle strength
- Size of the masseter muscles
- Dose prescribed
- Metabolism
- Previous treatment
- Individual response
Maintenance treatment may be considered once muscle activity has returned.
Is there any downtime?
Most clients return to normal daily activities after treatment.
Temporary effects may include:
- Small raised bumps at injection points
- Redness
- Bruising
- Tenderness
- Mild aching through the jaw
- Temporary changes in chewing strength
- Temporary asymmetry as the treatment develops
Masseter treatment aftercare
Following treatment:
- Remain upright for approximately four hours
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the treatment area
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol for approximately 24 hours
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms and excessive heat
- Avoid facial massage or treatments involving pressure over the jaw
- Apply makeup gently once injection sites have closed
- Allow the treatment time to develop before assessing the result

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does masseter treatment cost?
Masseter treatment at Sculpted Rose is £225.
A face-to-face prescribing appointment is required before treatment.
Will it make my face slimmer?
Where prominent masseter muscles contribute to the width of the lower face, reducing their activity can gradually create a more tapered appearance.
The amount of change depends on your anatomy.
If facial width is primarily caused by bone structure or facial fat, the effect may be more limited.
How quickly will I see facial slimming?
This is not an immediate treatment.
Muscle activity reduces first, while visible changes in facial shape develop more gradually over several weeks.
Will my jaw look dramatically different?
Usually not.
The aim is to create a gradual and balanced change rather than a sudden or unnatural-looking reduction in facial width.
Does the treatment hurt?
Most clients find the injections manageable.
You may feel a brief pinch or sting at each injection point.
Will it affect chewing?
Some clients notice temporary changes in chewing strength or muscle fatigue.
The treatment is carefully planned to reduce unwanted cosmetic prominence while maintaining normal function.
How long does masseter treatment last?
This varies between clients.
The muscles gradually regain activity over time, and maintenance may be required if you wish to retain the effect.
Can masseter treatment be combined with jawline filler?
Potentially.
The two treatments work in different ways:
Masseter treatment can reduce the prominence of the jaw muscles.
Jawline filler adds structure and definition.
In suitable clients, a combination approach may be considered following full facial assessment.
Is this treatment for jaw pain or TMJ?
At Sculpted Rose, masseter treatment is offered for cosmetic purposes, specifically where prominent masseter muscles contribute to a wider or squarer-looking lower face.
If you are experiencing jaw pain, locking, significant clicking or other symptoms, you should seek appropriate medical or dental assessment.
Who may not be suitable?
Treatment may not be appropriate if you:
- Are under 18
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have active infection in the treatment area
- Are currently unwell
- Have certain neurological or muscular conditions
- Take medication that may affect suitability
- Have not completed the required face-to-face prescribing appointment
- Have lower-face width that is unlikely to respond to muscle treatment
- Have expectations that cannot realistically be achieved
Suitability is always assessed individually.
