What is lip filler?
Lip filler is an injectable treatment used to enhance lip shape, restore lost volume, improve balance or create subtle definition.
At Sculpted Rose Aesthetics & Laser, lip filler is never approached as a one-size-fits-all treatment.
Your natural lip shape, facial proportions, previous filler and the level of enhancement you want will all influence the treatment plan.
Some clients want a very subtle refresh. Others may want more definition, improved symmetry or a fuller result.
Our focus is always on creating lips that still look like your lips, just more balanced, refined or enhanced.
Every treatment begins with a consultation and lip assessment before any filler is placed.
What can lip filler help with?
Lip filler may be used to:

Lip filler cannot create perfect symmetry and may not correct differences caused primarily by muscle movement or underlying anatomy.
How does lip filler work?
Lip filler is usually made from hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found within the body and can be formulated into injectable gels with different levels of softness and support.
A product is selected according to your natural lips and the result you would like to achieve.
Small amounts of filler are then placed into carefully selected areas of the lips using a fine needle, cannula or a combination of techniques.
The aim is to improve shape and proportion without simply adding unnecessary volume.
What happens during treatment?
Your appointment begins with a consultation and lip assessment.
We will discuss:
- Your natural lip shape
- What you would like to improve
- Previous lip filler
- Any previous dissolving
- Your medical history
- Medication
- History of cold sores
- The type of result you would like
- Possible risks and side effects
The lips are then cleansed and prepared.
Numbing may be used, and many dermal fillers also contain local anaesthetic.
The filler is introduced gradually while the shape and balance of the lips are continually assessed.
How much filler will I need?
This depends on your lips and your treatment goals.
More product does not automatically create a better result.
For clients wanting subtle enhancement, a conservative approach may be recommended.
For clients wanting more noticeable volume, it can sometimes be better to build this gradually over more than one appointment rather than placing too much filler at once.
When will I see the result?
An immediate change will usually be visible.
However, the lips swell very easily and can look considerably larger or more uneven during the first few days.
Swelling commonly increases during the first 24 to 48 hours before gradually reducing.
We recommend allowing approximately two weeks for your lips to settle before judging the result.
How long does lip filler last?
Longevity varies between clients.
Factors include:
- Product used
- Amount of filler
- Individual metabolism
- Lip movement
- Lifestyle
- Previous treatment history
Rather than automatically topping up the lips at a set interval, we prefer to reassess them and only add further product when appropriate.
Is there any downtime?
Some swelling should be expected after lip filler.
Temporary effects may include:
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Tenderness
- Firmness
- Small lumps
- Temporary asymmetry
- Redness around injection sites
- Dryness
- Mild itching
- Sensitivity
The lips can sometimes look uneven while swelling is developing or settling.
This is not an accurate representation of the final result.
Lip filler aftercare
Following treatment:
- Avoid touching or pressing the lips unnecessarily
- Keep the area clean
- Do not massage the lips unless specifically instructed
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol for approximately 24 hours
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms and excessive heat
- Avoid very hot drinks until normal sensation has returned
- Avoid kissing or firm pressure on the lips immediately after treatment
- Avoid lipstick or makeup until the injection sites have closed
- Avoid dental treatment for the period advised by your practitioner
- Avoid sunbeds and significant sun exposure
- Use a clean, gentle lip balm if required
- Do not pick dry skin or injection sites
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated if swelling is significant
Contact the clinic if anything feels unusual or concerning.
Swelling may be more noticeable the morning after treatment.
Allow approximately two weeks before judging your lips.
Cold sores and lip filler
Lip injections can trigger a cold sore in clients who carry the herpes simplex virus.
Please tell us if you have ever experienced cold sores, even if you have not had one recently.
Treatment cannot be performed over an active cold sore.
If you experience frequent outbreaks, you may wish to speak to a pharmacist or medical professional about whether preventative antiviral medication is appropriate before treatment.
When should I contact the clinic?
Please contact us promptly if you experience:
- Significant or increasing pain
- Unusual whitening or blanching of the lip or surrounding skin
- Grey, dusky or mottled skin
- Skin that feels unusually cold
- Blistering
- Rapidly worsening swelling
- Increasing redness or heat
- Discharge or signs of infection
- Any sudden or unusual symptom that concerns you

They may look considerably fuller initially because of swelling.
This is temporary.
The lips should not be judged during the first few days, and we recommend waiting approximately two weeks before assessing the settled result.
How much filler do I need?

- Existing filler

If you want a significant increase in volume, this may be better achieved gradually rather than in one appointment.

Does lip filler hurt?
The lips are a sensitive area, so some discomfort is expected.

How long does lip filler last?
There is no exact timeframe that applies to everyone.

Can lip filler migrate?
Yes, migration can occur.
Factors such as product placement, anatomy, the amount of filler present and repeated treatment may all contribute.
If existing filler appears to have migrated, we may recommend dissolving it before adding more.
Can lip filler be dissolved?
Can I have lip filler if I have had filler elsewhere?
Usually, yes.
We will assess the lips before treatment.
Please tell us:
- When you last had lip filler
- Which product was used, if known
- How much was placed
- Whether you have previously had filler dissolved
- Whether you have experienced any previous complications
If there is already sufficient filler present, we may recommend waiting rather than adding more.
What if I have a cold sore?
Treatment must be postponed if you have an active cold sore.
Lip injections can also trigger an outbreak in clients with a history of herpes simplex.
Please tell us about any previous cold sores before treatment.
Can I have lip filler before a wedding or holiday?
We recommend allowing plenty of time before an important event.
Swelling and bruising are possible and can occasionally last longer than expected.
Where possible, book at least a few weeks in advance.
Can I kiss after lip filler?
We recommend avoiding firm pressure on the lips immediately after treatment.
This includes kissing, massaging and anything that significantly compresses the lips.
Follow the individual advice provided during your appointment.
Can I wear lipstick afterwards?
It is best to wait until the injection sites have closed before applying lipstick, lip liner or other makeup products.
This helps reduce unnecessary contamination of the area.
Who is lip filler not suitable for?
Treatment may need to be postponed or may not be suitable if you:
- Are under 18
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have an active cold sore
- Have an active dental infection
- Have active infection or inflammation around the mouth
- Are currently unwell
- Have certain allergies or medical conditions
- Have recently undergone certain dental procedures
- Have significant migrated or unresolved previous filler
- Have expectations that cannot realistically be achieved
