What are Polynucleotides?
Polynucleotides are an advanced injectable treatment designed to support skin repair, hydration and regeneration.
Rather than adding facial volume or changing the shape of a feature, polynucleotides focus on improving the quality and condition of the skin itself. They are commonly selected by clients who want their skin to look healthier, smoother, brighter and more resilient while maintaining an entirely natural appearance.
They are particularly popular for the delicate under-eye area, where the skin is naturally thinner and can show early signs of ageing, dehydration and tiredness.
What can Polynucleotides help with?

How do Polynucleotides work?
Polynucleotides are purified chains of nucleotides, which are the building blocks found within DNA.
When introduced into the skin, they create an environment that supports the skin’s natural repair and renewal processes. They are used to encourage improved hydration, elasticity and skin quality rather than to provide the immediate volume associated with dermal filler.
The treatment is regenerative and results build gradually as the skin responds over time.
The Under-Eye Area
The under-eye area has very thin and delicate skin. As collagen, elasticity and hydration reduce, the area can begin to look crepey, lined, shadowed or tired.
Polynucleotides can be an excellent option where the primary concern is the quality of the under-eye skin rather than a deep hollow requiring volume replacement.
They do not perform the same function as tear trough filler. A consultation is important so that we can identify whether polynucleotides, Lumi Eyes, tear trough filler or a combination-based plan is most appropriate.
What happens during treatment?
Treatment begins with a full consultation and assessment. The skin is cleansed, and a topical numbing product may be applied.
Small amounts of product are then introduced into the selected treatment area using a fine needle. This can leave small, raised bumps immediately after the procedure. These are expected and usually settle as the product disperses.
The appointment includes appropriate preparation, treatment and aftercare guidance.
How many sessions will I need?
A course of treatment is normally recommended rather than a single appointment.
The precise number and spacing of sessions will depend on the product used, treatment area, skin condition and individual response. This will be explained during consultation.
Maintenance sessions may be recommended to support the result.
When will I see results?
Polynucleotide results are progressive rather than immediate.
Clients may begin to notice improvements in hydration and brightness first, followed by gradual changes in texture, elasticity and the appearance of fine lines.
Results vary, and the treatment cannot completely remove every line, hollow or area of pigmentation.
Downtime
Temporary effects can include:
- Small raised bumps at the injection points
- Redness
- Swelling, particularly around the eyes
- Tenderness
- Bruising
- Mild itching or sensitivity
The small bumps normally reduce as the product settles. Under-eye swelling can be more noticeable the following morning and should be considered when planning treatment around work or social occasions.
Aftercare
Following treatment, clients will normally be advised to:
- Avoid touching the area unnecessarily
- Avoid applying makeup for the period advised
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms and excessive heat
- Avoid facials and active skincare until advised
- Use gentle skincare and daily SPF
- Contact the clinic if anything unexpected occurs
Frequently Asked Questions
Who might not be suitable?
Treatment may not be suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for clients with active infection or inflammation in the area, or for those with certain health conditions or allergies.
As polynucleotide products are commonly derived from purified fish sources, clients with a known fish allergy must inform the practitioner.
A full medical consultation will be completed before treatment.
What is the difference between Polynucleotides and Lumi Eyes?
Both treatments are used to improve the appearance of the under-eye area, but they are not identical.
Lumi Eyes is primarily selected to hydrate and brighten the under-eye skin. Polynucleotides place greater emphasis on supporting regeneration, resilience and longer-term improvements in skin quality.
The most suitable treatment will depend on the condition of the skin, the client’s main concern and the result they wish to achieve.
What is the difference between Polynucleotides and Tear Trough Filler?
Polynucleotides improve the condition of the skin but do not replace significant lost volume.
Tear trough filler may be considered where there is a true hollow beneath the eye. However, filler is not suitable for everyone, particularly where puffiness, fluid retention or poor skin quality is present.
A face-to-face assessment allows us to recommend the safest and most appropriate option.
Are polynucleotides a filler?
No. They are not designed to create structure or facial volume in the way dermal filler does.
Will I look differently immediately?
The treatment does not dramatically alter facial features. Immediately afterwards, there may be temporary swelling or small bumps, while the intended skin improvements develop gradually.
Are polynucleotides only for the eyes?
No. Depending on the product and the client’s needs, they may also be used to improve skin quality in other suitable areas.
How long do the results last?
Results and longevity vary. A recommended initial course followed by maintenance generally provides a better outcome than an isolated session.
Can polynucleotides remove dark circles?
They may improve dark circles where thin, dehydrated or poor-quality skin is contributing to the shadowing. They cannot correct every cause of dark circles, particularly those caused by anatomy, deep hollows or pigmentation.
